Driving lessons Clayton — on your real local roads
Looking for driving lessons Clayton? Clayton is one of the busiest suburbs in Melbourne's south-east, home to Monash University's Clayton campus and Monash Medical Centre. Learning here means getting comfortable with heavy traffic, buses, cyclists and lots of pedestrians, which makes it a demanding but very effective place to learn.
Your lessons start on Clayton's quieter residential streets, then build up to the busier roads: Clayton Road, Centre Road, and the Princes Highway (Dandenong Road), with their multi-lane intersections and turn lanes. We also practise around the university and hospital areas, where you'll learn to watch for pedestrians, buses and drivers pulling in and out.
Clayton is home to many students and new arrivals, and plenty of them are converting an overseas licence. If you already drive but need to adjust to Victorian road rules and test standards, a few focused lessons can get you test-ready quickly.
Where you'll practise in Clayton
- Quiet residential streets to build the basics
- Clayton Road and Centre Road: busy multi-lane arterials
- The Princes Highway (Dandenong Road)
- Monash University and hospital-precinct traffic, buses and pedestrians
- Roundabouts, turn lanes and give-way intersections
Your local test centre: VicRoads Dandenong
Most learners in the south-east sit their drive test at the Dandenong VicRoads customer service centre. In the lead-up to your test we rehearse the kinds of roads and manoeuvres examiners use around VicRoads Dandenong, and our test day package includes a warm-up lesson plus use of the instructor's car for the test itself.
Preparing for your drive test
The drive test starts with a short pre-drive check of the car, followed by two on-road stages; you go on to the second stage only once you've driven safely and competently in the first.
Clayton's busy roads are good preparation, because you'll already be used to multi-lane traffic and lots going on around you. In the lead-up we also practise roundabouts, lane changes, merges and a reversing manoeuvre such as a parallel park or three-point turn.
Most learners who don't pass first time lose marks for missed mirror and blind-spot checks, hesitating at intersections, poor lane positioning or inconsistent speed. We focus on those from your first lesson, so they're second nature by test day.
Before you can book your drive test
- Hold your Ls long enough — if you're under 21, that's at least 12 months on your learner permit.
- Log your 120 hours — 120 hours of supervised driving including 20 at night, recorded in your logbook or the myLearners app (for under-21 learners).
- Pass the Hazard Perception Test — the VicRoads test you sit before the drive test.
- Have an eligible car — clean, registered and roadworthy with a working handbrake, or simply use our dual-control car, which is included in the test-day package.
